SYDNEY COAL LOADER AR
An augmented reality experience that rebuilds the Coal Loader’s industrial past over its harbourside ruins, and brings the wildlife living there today out of the tunnels, all on the visitor’s own device.
Client: Coal Loader Centre for Sustainability
Location: Waverton, New South Wales
THE CHALLENGE
An AR history experience for the Coal Loader
The Coal Loader at Waverton is one of Sydney Harbour’s great industrial relics, reborn as a centre for sustainability. But its story is hard to see. The wharf, tunnels and sandstone remain, while the machinery, the rail lines and the working life of the site vanished decades ago.
The challenge was to let visitors see what this place once was, and the wildlife that calls it home now, while standing exactly where it all happened.
THE IMMERSIVE IDEA
The site as it was, overlaid on the site as it is
Using augmented reality on their own phones and tablets, visitors look through the screen and watch the site’s history reassemble in front of them.
The coal loading infrastructure returns to the old wharf, with rail tracks, coal skips and loading gantries digitally rebuilt and aligned with the ruins they left behind. Standing on the viewing platforms, the past and the present occupy the same view.
WHY XR?
Heritage you can stand inside
Signs and archival photos ask visitors to imagine. AR does the imagining for them, keeping the real site as the backdrop while its missing pieces return to place. That connection between story and location is something no brochure or museum room can reproduce.
It also brings the site’s living side out of hiding. The bats that roost in the old tunnels take flight in AR, letting visitors meet the wildlife that has made the industrial relic its habitat.
INSIDE THE EXPERIENCE
A self-guided journey around the site
Visitors explore the site at their own pace, raising their device at key locations to reveal each moment, from reconstructed machinery on the wharf to creatures emerging from the tunnels.
Because it runs on the devices people already carry, the experience needs no headsets, no staffing and no infrastructure on the heritage site itself. Families wander, point, discover and share.
THE IMPACT
Making a layered site legible
The experience makes the Coal Loader’s layers visible: the industrial past, the harbour setting and the living ecosystem that has grown into the ruins.
It turns a walk around a heritage platform into a story told in place, giving the site a way to explain itself to every visitor who arrives with a phone in their pocket.
